Mayer comes with high praise from the Appling staff, and even with less than impressive agility and speed numbers he seems to find his spots on the field. Attacking the run is Mayer’s specialty, and I love how he sticks to his responsibility shadowing the ball carrier out into the flat. Against Pierce, he really bottled up a good 2020 running back making some nice solo tackles in the open field. Mayer takes pretty good angles, and seems to understand how adjust his lack of speed in order to take consistently good angles. Mayer is a hitter at the end of the day, and you don’t see him have too much of an affect on the passing game – at least on film. He’s started almost every year of HS, and just one of those instinctual linebackers who just finds his way to the football.
